Held July 13–17 at Art City in Winnipeg, Put Yourself on the Map! brought participants together to create a collaborative, interactive map of the West Broadway neighbourhood. Through walking, listening, storytelling, and artmaking, the workshop explored how everyday movements and personal memories shape our relationships with place.

Beginning at Art City’s front door, participants used GPS tracking to turn their walks into digital drawings while collecting neighbourhood sounds, stories, and memories with portable audio recorders. Back in the studio, these routes were traced onto a mural-sized map. Participants enriched the map with drawings, painting, photographs, and collage, bringing favourite landmarks, local encounters, and imaginative interpretations into a shared composition.

The resulting artwork is a map that can be explored through sight, touch, and sound. Conductive ink connected to a microprocessor transforms selected images into touch sensors activating an audio recording gathered during the workshop. These recordings connect the map’s visual elements with the voices and sounds of the neighbourhood.

Combining individual journeys into a collective portrait, the map makes space for the personal, playful, and emotional dimensions of belonging. It presents West Broadway through the experiences of its participants, making their movements, memories, and relationships both visible and audible.

Explore the map and listen to the recordings.
